ARGANS is a small, independent company of scientists and software developers based in Plymouth, Devon. We also have a branch based in Sophia-Antipolis, France. Our clients include the European Space Agency (ESA) as well as the European Commission. We are currently involved with Copernicus missions (Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3), several marine litter detection projects as well as Horizon2020 CoReSyF project. We collaborate with various research institutes, private companies and independent consultants, located across Europe, on many of our projects.
ARGANS Ltd. supports the development and maintenance of the European Space Agency SMOS Soil Moisture detection software and DIMITRI (Database for Imaging Multi-spectral Instruments and Tools for Radiometric Inter-comparison), a tool for optical remote sensor calibration & validation. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of these analytical tools, which will involve implementation of the software, data ingestion and analysis from ESA/NASA missions.
The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person with experience in C++ programming. As a member of a small and well integrated multi-disciplinary team of engineers, programmers and scientists the person selected for the position will have the opportunity to participate on international projects, in collaboration with teams at the forefront of satellite-based Earth Observation.
Primary role and responsibilities
- To provide ongoing support to the SMOS Soil Moisture project, including development and maintenance of the code in C++
- Performing new unit and new integration and regression tests
- Providing programming and technical support to Senior Scientists and Engineers
- Implementation of algorithms, software testing and verification
- Maintenance and operation of processing software and tools developed by ARGANS
- To develop Calibration and Validation software
- Analysis of EO sensor products
- Providing support on the DIMITRI project
- Writing technical and scientific documentation
Post: C++ Programmer, £30,000+ per annum, depending on experience.

Work Placement / Internship
We host interns from the UK and EU throughout the year; offering both funded and non-funded internships, we ask for a minimum of 3 months commitment and can last up to 12 months.
